I’m running The Great North Run in memory of my Dad
On the 8th September 2023 I sadly lost my Dad, Peter, to an incurable illness called Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis.
IPF is a lung condition that scars your lungs and makes it difficult to breathe. As a progressive illness it sadly gets worse over time, and even with every treatment my dad could get, he really struggled towards the end of his life. Despite this, he never stopped being independent! I remember the last time I saw him (I had no idea it would be the last time), he was going from his chair in the living room to his bed and he was so adamant that he would get up and walk to his bed himself. Despite trying to get him in the wheelchair he refused and got himself to bed on his own, slowly and carefully. Thinking about his determination (and stubbornness!) that night just to complete a task that we would all take for granted is what I know will get me through the half marathon.
This year the date of the GNR marks exactly one year since my dad passed, so it only makes sense that I give it a go now (it’s my first ever time doing it too!) and raise money for Asthma + Lung UK a charity that supports people with IPF and many other breathing related illnesses. Just £22 could go towards Health Care Advisors and Respiratory Specialists supporting someone with the information they need to live well.
