I’m running the London Marathon 2025 to fight for lung health!
On December 12th 2023 my wife and I welcomed our firstborn baby boy into the world - Jasper! Since then he has added more magic and joy to our lives than we thought possible, as we began this family-building chapter.
At 8lbs10 he was born a healthily chunky weight, however at 10 weeks old he was diagnosed with Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) leading to Bronchiolitis. For many babies this can be low risk and can go away on it's own, however in a small number of cases it can lead to serious conditions such as pneumonia, and can be fatal.
Jasper was admitted into hospital and immediately began a course of treatment involving a variety of different ventilators to support his breathing, a feeding tube and constant SpO2 monitoring whilst his body fought this virus. Together we spent a week in hospital (with many sleepless nights) as we navigated this condition and Jasper fought like a trooper, eventually getting to the point where he could sustain his SpO2 levels without the need of a ventilator.
Today we are so grateful that Jasper is a healthy happy baby, and at the time of writing is fast approaching the age of 1! However my wife and I still have vivid memories of this difficult time, navigating a traumatic health scare with our vulnerable newborn baby.
This time shone a light on the sort of health conditions newborns can be faced with, and in one of the many hours attempting to pass time in the hospital sitting by Jasper's side, my wife asked me if I could run my next marathon for a charity that helps babies struggling with this condition. So, here I am!
This will be my third marathon, and what better one to be running in than London for such a meaningful cause. I have run a 3hr10 and 3hr11 marathon before, so my goal for London 2025 is to run it in under 3 hours!
A donation of any amount will help UK Asthma and Lung deliver life-changing support for people suffering from all sorts of different lung issues like Jasper did at 10 weeks old. I am beyond excited to be representing Team Breathe in April 2025!
